Watha Cultural Revival Initiative

Reviving and preserving the rich cultural heritage and identity of a marginalized tribe through educational programming, a dedicated cultural and language center, and Watha-led tourism initiatives

Reviving the Culture and Identity of the Original Conservationists of Tsavo

Location: Maungu, Kenya

Purpose: RIDE's Watha Cultural Revival Initiative in Maungu, Kenya, is a vibrant tapestry of heritage and pride, devoted to reigniting the flame of the Watha culture, the original guardians of Tsavo's natural wonders. Through our three pivotal projects, we aim to create an educational renaissance, where the Watha cultural identity flourishes once more. We facilitate immersive educational programming that serves as a conduit for passing down ancestral knowledge, ensuring that future generations embrace their roots with unwavering pride. At the heart of this revival lies the creation of the Watha Cultural & Language Centre in Maungu, a sacred space that nurtures cultural expression, artistry, and community cohesion.

As we rekindle the flames of Watha heritage, we aspire to ignite a new era of Watha-led tourism. By conducting hospitality trainings, we empower Watha community members to lead tourism initiatives that showcase their culture and values, inviting the world to witness the true essence of Tsavo. Join us in this transformative movement, as we honor the Watha's legacy and pave the way for a cultural revival that transcends time and fosters harmony between people and nature. Together, let us ensure that the original conservationists of Tsavo thrive once more, as the heartbeat of their culture echoes through the ages.

Watha Cultural Revival Projects

  • Develop cultural programs

This project aims to develop engaging and informative cultural programs that promote and celebrate the unique heritage, traditions, and customs of the Watha community. These programs will include traditional storytelling, dance, music, and art, providing a platform for intergenerational knowledge transfer and fostering a sense of identity.

  • Construct Watha community centre

The construction of a dedicated community center in Maungu will serve as a hub for cultural activities and events. This center will provide a space for workshops, exhibitions, and educational sessions, offering opportunities for Watha community members to come together and share their heritage and culture.

  • Establish Watha-led tourism

Our goal is to empower the Watha community economically through sustainable and responsible tourism initiatives led by the community members themselves. By showcasing their cultural heritage of Tsavo East & West National Parks, the Watha people will offer tourists a unique and authentic experience.
